Guatemala Workshop—mid February 2012

Join Jim Pedersen and Jan Gustafson in a painting/sketching expedition to Antigua and Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Jim and Jan have visited this area multiple times and are looking forward to sharing the fruits of their experience. Our time will be divided between the old colonial capital of Guatemala, Antigua, and the rugged caldera Lake, Atitlan. Centuries old Antigua features fabulous accommodations amongst ancient buildings, preserved ruins, and a vibrant market. The Lake is surrounded by vaulting mountains, ridges and two volcanoes. The 25 mile circumference is home to many Mayan villages and bustling towns. We will be staying along the lake at the Vulcano Lodge in Jaibilito. Our hosts are a delightful Norwegian family and the individual cabin are nested within a roomy tropical garden. This is one of the world’s premier coffee growing areas and the lodge coffee beans come from their own back yard.

Dates: 14 days February 16th to 29th, 2012
Location: Antigua Guatemala and Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
$1475 for the trip and $300 for the workshop. Includes accommodations, all breakfasts, 3 dinners and al transfers. Excludes airfare.
Price increases to $1550 and $300 after August 25th. Final deadlines and payments due: October 1, 2011.

Shadows and Winter Landscapes (Pedersen, Winter, 2012) for intermediate & advanced painter )

Shadows are the artist’s friend and here we take a close look and apply them in all four sessions. The first session is theory and hands-on watercolor technique--the methods for creating convincing interesting shadows. In session 2 we look at shadows in still life. Session 3 is about shadows in the snowy landscape. And in session 4 we deal with another aspect of the winter landscape, bare-branched wintery trees. Bring two half-sheets(15x22”) of 140# watercolor paper or equivalent to the first class. Your regular art kit should get you started or check this supply list if you need to start fresh. You will need a small “rigger” brush for the last session.
Meets: 4 Wednesday Afternoons, 1:30--4PM ($100 for 4 sessions)
Dates: March 7th--April 4th (excluding March 28th) 2012
Location:1040 Dellwood Ave., Boulder, CO. (1 1/2 blocks west of Broadway in N. Boulder)
